What should you wear for your senior portrait session?

What to wear for your Senior Portrait Session

Getting all of your Senior Portrait outfits picked out may feel like an overwhelming task. Maybe you get too wrapped up in trying to establish a concrete style for your shoot, maybe you’ve just never been very into fashion - all of this is completely understandable. My hope is that the following concepts and Senior Portrait standards help you get your thoughts organized. I think you’ll find that it's much simpler than you think!

1. Neutrals and Solids Never Fail
Neutrals and solid colors keep the focus on you. When in doubt, black, gray, and white will always provide a classy and classic style, and as always, they go with everything. If looking to sport a few basic colors, be mindful of which ones cool skin tones vs warm will compliment best. Warm skin tones favor fall colors such as browns, warm reds, yellows, and oranges. Cool skin tones favor deep greens, blues, and purple. These neutrals and complimentary colors are universally photo-friendly as they typically work well with any background.

2. Dressing Up Essentials
Make a grand impression in your Senior Portraits with a bit of formal wear. The elegant and customary fashion choice for girls is a maxi length dress and for guys, a pair of dress pants and a button down shirt. If your preferences lie elsewhere, don’t be shy to experiment before your shoot date. Try out some other suitable options such as a crew neck sweater and slacks combo or a skirt/blouse pairing. Consider including tasteful gold or silver accessories for a little added class. Take full advantage of this opportunity to give us a peek of your professional side.

3. Embrace the Trendy and Comfy
While neutral and dressy outfits are imperative for the shoot, pulling some choices that resemble your ‘street’ style is key too! Put on something that’s authentically you. What's the go-to outfit that makes you feel cool and confident? What generational trends will make you feel fresh and me feel old? Just one thing to keep in mind: flashy graphics and too much pattern is not a portrait's best friend. School me on what’s stylish these days but for the sake of the quality of your photos, refrain from busyness.

4. Show Off
Your style is more than just the outfit, it’s what you're into. If you’re an athlete, musician, artist, intellectualist, a mix of two or somewhere in between, show it off! It’s 100% recommended that you bring your team uniform(s) and/or any specific props that showcase where exactly your passions lie. Your dedication deserves attention - not to mention the cap and gown you’ve worked years to wear!

5. Preparation is Key A few general preparation tips that’ll help make your Senior Portrait day that much easier:
. Be conscious of the weather forecast. Bring a jacket if chilly or windy weather is in store for shoots taking place outdoors.
. If you're doing makeup, make sure it’s a look that you love and that you know goes well with each outfit.
. Don’t forget your different shoes and accessories! Double check you have everything before heading out.
. Get your beauty sleep so you can wake up relaxed and refreshed. A case of the contagious yawns won’t do anybody any good.
